If you can’t sleep, you can’t function properly. Anyone who can’t sleep, already knows this.
There is so much that affects whether or not you sleep – stuff weighing on your mind is a big one. I’ll come back to this bit later – I didn’t sleep particularly well for a couple of years and sort of created my own technique for getting back to sleep when I awoke in the night.
Comfort is quite important too! How many times have you, for instance, booked a hotel room, or a holiday and looked at the images of the room, and thought ‘oh yes that looks lovely’ But when you actually snuggle down to sleep, you realise that the bed is awful? Disaster! Especially when you are there for your holiday!
Worse if it’s your mattress at home!
I think, the trouble with choosing a new mattress, is the VAST choice and the feeling that you really ought to actually visit a shop and try some out, and if there’s two of you in the bed, that you really should BOTH go, and THAT, to me, is enough to put me off going!! All that hassle! Who wants to waste a Saturday doing that? Not my husband that’s for sure lol. So you put it on the back burner… your mattress is alright… after all…isn’t it..?
So here’s the stroke of luck, for me – but I am so handing it on to you – A lovely email arrived in my inbox, from Warren Evans (the award winning bed people – Sunday times award winners and highest rated mattress shop in the Which? ‘Best Mattress Retailers’ Survey 2017 – So they know what they are talking about) asking me if I’d like to review one of their Tempur_UK Deluxe mattresses.
Perfect timing! 9 years in and our old mattress needed replacing and even better, they could help me choose!! (and hopefully by writing all this down, I can help YOU choose!)
SO – I am going to talk about the TEMPUR DELUXE range & you should know that our previous mattress was a Memory Foam one, so we are already used to the concept. (But mannnnn they have changed since we bought ours)
There are 3 mattresses to chose from within this range (HURRAH – narrowed down already)
1 – Tempur – Original Deluxe– for a firmer feel – this mattress has pressure relieving properties that can reduce tossing and turning during the night.
2- Tempur Cloud Deluxe – For a softer feel (which initially put me off as we don’t like a bed that’s too soft/spongy) but I spoke to Warren Evans about it and they explained that the top layer of the mattress is made of extra soft materials to cushion and relax, while the firm support material is underneath. Best of both worlds to me)
3-Tempur Sensation Deluxe – For those that like the feeling of a sprung mattress, but want the support of a memory foam one. It uses a new technology called High Mobility which supports you lightly but still adapts to your shape.
So, we chose the Tempur Cloud.
I totally relied on the information I received from Warren Evans, (they have 38 years of experience in stuff like this) and we didn’t go shopping and try any of them out in a store, although there are plenty of showrooms – we, like lots of people just didn’t have the time to spare. It really goes against the grain to not go ‘bed & mattress shopping’ in a proper shop! But actually, I think it’s really hard to choose, even in a shop. I don’t think you can tell how comfy a bed is by lying on it in clothes and shoes, in daylight, with shop pillows and no duvet! Everyone is different though, and Warren Evans recommend that if you can, go in store to try their mattresses for around 15 minutes in your natural sleeping position.
Look! it’s virtually bubble wrapped!
Price wise, this mattress retails at £1484 for a King Sized mattress. ( Don’t forget to use my code WETEMPUR for £50 off all Tempur mattresses over £1000 until 5th March 2018)
So what would you pay for a good night’s sleep?
I have been doing a few calculations about this. Presuming you have the mattress for the guaranteed 10 years, it works out at 40p per night. if there’s two of you, divide that by two! 20p a night each. Twenty Pence. I can lose 20p down the back of the sofa, I mean! (the same principal can be applied to shoe buying too… always halve it with shoes as they come in pairs lol)
So, we are two weeks in, with this mattress now, and I’ll address a few points that have been raised from my Instagram post
- ‘Memory Foam mattresses get too hot’ – in our opinion, not so – we always sleep under a Summer tog duck down duvet anyway, & we haven’t found it too hot and I haven’t woken up sweating.
- ‘They feel spongy’ – I was worried about this, particularly as we chose a softer feel. I had visions of landing in it like falling in to a blancmange and not being able to move! I have to report that so far, the blancmange effect has not come to pass! We have found that the foam keeps its shape, whilst gently supporting every contour. I wake up feeling like even my ankles are supported. Rolling over is not a problem either. It is so comfortable I actually can’t fault it.
- Gav has seen an improvement in a sore shoulder he’s been harbouring and I am sleeping like a log.
- I don’t get bounced all over the place when Gav rolls over or gets up!
- Remember, you won’t have to lug it upstairs on your own Warren Evans’ delivery includes delivery to the room, and if it’s a whole bed, they will assemble it too.
What I will say, is that I think it might take a week or two to get used to memory foam if you haven’t slept on it before. We had a night away recently and slept on a sprung mattress – it was so bouncy ! And we both woke up with sore backs , I guess what I am saying is when you switch from something you are used to, to something new, you need to give it a fair go before deciding it’s not for you.
We are sleeping so well, we absolutely love it and I am really happy I chose The Cloud – (I was asked to give honest feedback, and this is my honest opinion. I would recommend this bed to anyone. Ask me again in 6 months, but so far, honestly, so good)
On to sleep tips – We all know we should switch our technology off an hour or two before bed. And there are plenty of sleep tips on the Warren Evans Blog
When Gav was first diagnosed (I am not going to talk about it here but there are lots of posts on my blog under ‘blood cancer’ ) we both had real trouble sleeping. I wanted to make sure he fell asleep before me, so as a consequence I found myself unable to drift off, and even when I did I would awake in a panic in the night, unable to stop my mind racing and worrying and thinking all sorts of dark thoughts.
I devised a way of stopping that, it took some practice, but I got there in the end. I’ll share it – it’s not rocket science but it works for me. I hope it works for you too.
So, if you are a worrier, and you lie awake with all sorts in your head and it stops you sleeping, try this
If a worry comes in to your head, visualise it coming from the side, and start building a wall in your mind, to block the worry. If it comes head on, build the wall in front of you. keep building the wall, and if you are then getting worries in from all directions, block them with silly thoughts. I think about things like this ‘do we need more milk, I wonder when Boden sale is on, how many brands of tea are there in the supermarket, what’s that actor called, you know, the one in thingy, is Trump’s hair real, shall we plant more bulbs this Spring’ Rubbish! anything! DO NOT let the bad thoughts in! you are already building a wall – is it made of rainbow bricks? are you going random or patterned ?’ more rubbish! anything to fill your mind with anything except your worries.
The middle of the night is an excellent time for your worries to attack you as they have your full attention and you can almost indulge these thoughts as you are awake anyway, right? DO NOT INDULGE THEM. Things are always worse at night, too, because there is generally nothing you can do about them until morning!
So build the walls, block the thoughts with daft thoughts and eventually, you will find yourself in that weird not quite awake, not quite sleeping sort of dream like state that leads to sleep, go with it.
It took me ages to master it and now I don’t even need to build a wall. I just REFUSE point blank to indulge negative thoughts at night, no matter how pressing they are. Sleep is more pressing. Worries can just get in the queue!!
